15/06/2019 5:15 pm – 15/06/2019 7:15 pm | Waterstones, 82 Gower St, Bloomsbury, London WC1E 6EQ
Come along to Waterstones Gower Street on Saturday 15th June at 5.15pm, where Rooms of their Own author Nino Strachey will be signing copies of her book (with wine & nibbles) and participating in a discussion panel on the topic of Queer Bloomsbury. Nino will be joined by Stuart N.Clarke, an independent scholar, editor of the Virginia Woolf Bulletin and of many of Woolf’s works, including Orlando: The Holograph Draft. The conversation will be chaired by Maggie Humm, Emeritus Professor of Cultural Studies, University of East London, and author/editor of a number of books about Woolf and Bloomsbury.
The Queer Bloomsbury panel discussion is part of a larger day of events that begins at 2pm with a Queer Bloomsbury walking tour lead by Jean Moorcroft Wilson and a 4pm panel discussion on adapting Mrs Dalloway.
Rooms of their Own explores the homes of Eddy Sackville-West, Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West, three figures linked to the Bloomsbury Group. Bringing together stories of love, desire and intimacy, of evolving relationships and erotic encounters, with vivid accounts of the settings in which they took place, it offers fresh insights into their complicated, interlocking lives. Complete with first-hand accounts, this book illuminates shifting social and moral attitudes towards sexuality and gender in the 1920s and 30s.
Nino Strachey is descended from a family at the heart of the Bloomsbury Group. Her research focuses on the expression of personality through place, interpreting the biography of buildings and collections. Since starting her career with the Landmark Trust, she has worked for English Heritage and the National Trust, curating the homes of scientists (Darwin), politicians (Churchill) and writers (Shaw). She is head of Research and Specialist Advice for the National Trust.
